GAK!

Gak was one of my favorite things to make as a kid.

 A. Because it was cheap

B. It is super easy

C. It is fun to play with

So I set the boys to work emptying the bottles of glue.

Followed by putting their stirring skills to use.

And within seconds of mixing the little bit of required borax to the glue/ water mixture we had instant Gak!

Now my goal is to keep it out of this little girls reach.

Break over

This long lasting winter sure has gotten me in a funk. A funk that some days has me not want to do anything. But the kids are off this week for spring break so motivated I must be. 

Thanks to the wonderful Pinterest I found a few ideas to keep them busy.

Tuesday we experimented with baking powdered and vinegar.

And away they went with droppers in hand, making some fizzy master pieces.

Success! I will keeping this activity in the back of my head for a quick go to rainy day activity.

Bomb threat

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine our little school district would receive a bomb threat.

 

Well it happened at 5:30 last night mine and Steve's cell phone both rang. We answered and listen to the same message. At 2:30 yesterday afternoon a note was found in a girls bathroom at the high school stating that there was a bomb in the school. The message assured us that the authorities had been notified and were currently at the school with bomb sniffing dogs checking everything over. Students that arrived at school today would have their back packs checked. And as of the time of the call, nothing concerning had been found.

 

What! A bomb where I feel my kids are safe.

 

Our school has always had safety measures in place long before the most recent shooting. And I know they followed them from experience. Several times in the past I have gone to the school during school hours and parked closest to the boys classroom hoping to run in and out quick. Every time I come across a locked door forcing me to run to the main entrance. Irked I admit I was at first, but now I am EXTREMELY grateful I had those few runs ins and know those doors ARE locked all the time once school starts. They have since locked the main doors that allowed you to walk right into the cafeteria, now you must walk into the office to be checked in before getting into the cafeteria and school. Again, relieved these procedures are in place.

 

So the question of the morning was, do I send the boys, or keep them home to be sure all is safe. After reading though some posts on a social networking site I felt better about sending them to school today. A good point was made that today they would be the safest with teachers on high alert and the authorities on site.

 

To the bus stop we went. I chatting with the moms and the kids playing like any other day. "We have to have faith in God that all will be ok today." One of the moms said this morning. And with that said we all waved good bye to our little men and I'm almost certain said a quick prayer that they returned later.

 

At 4pm like clock work, my 2 little men got off that bus, again just like any other day.

 

As grateful as I am that we received that call that kept us in the loop as to what happened yesterday. I wished there would have been another call that went out this morning to let us know that still nothing had turned up. At this time we haven't heard anything else, but i'm sure a letter home will be headed our way soon.

 

After extras hugs and kisses the kids were tucked safe and tight in their beds.

Sledding

The temperature was perfect, there was snow on the ground and that called for a sledding trip.

I was really hoping to hit up a BIG hill in a town near by, but Steve wasn't in a sledding mood :( So instead we geared up and head over to Gary and Mary's to give their hills a whirl.

The started out on the driveway making trip after trip down. Then made their way to the backyard to try another hill.

 

They did rather well trekking up and down those hills. After the few times I went down to help bring up a sled or little girl I'm glad we didn't head over to the big hill...

And Michael turns 9...

I remember it like yesterday, sitting in the hospital room waiting to meet our first mystery baby and wondering am I really ready for this.

 How will I know what he needs?

 How will I know when to feed him? 

How will I know how to be his mother?

And then that moment happens when he came into this world and was placed up on my belly and instantly I knew I could do this. He is mine.

 I will know what he needs.

I will know when he needs to eat.

And I will know how to be a wonderful mother.

It is no joke when people tell you, enjoy them because before you know it they will be all grown up. As I sit here I am still amazed that I am the mother of a 9 year old. WOW!

 

This little man is excels in everything he does. There is no sport that he doesn't enjoy playing or watching. From day 1 in kindergarten we knew school work was going to come easy to him and still to this day it does. Often times he has to be reminded by his teachers to put his hand down so others can answer the question. And boy what a social butterfly he is. Some days there will be 5 kids in my backyard all because Michael said come on over to play. 

I'm looking forward to watching him continue to grow into an even more amazing young man, but until then I'm sure hoping he will slow his growing down a bit ;)

Above and Beyond Museum

Landon's "Go See It" for cub scouts this month was a trip to a local museum. We have never been to the Above and Beyond Museum in Sheboygan before so we packed up all the kids and headed over. The boys got to get their hands dirty learning a little science...how to bake a cake.

I'm going to have to remember this recipe for at home. 1 box angel food cake and 1 box regular cake mix, mixed together. Then you take 3 tablespoons of the mixture and add it to 2 tablespoons of water and cook in a microwave for 1 minute and tada....instant cake! Talk about an easy way to have desert every night!

Many trips were made across the suspended tunnel to get to the slides.

After a fun filled Sunday afternoon of hard playing, back home to rest on the couch we went.
